Charges pressed against 198 in two cases
Charges have been pressed against 198 people, including Jamaat-backed chairman of Chirirbandar Upazila Parishad, in two separate cases filed in connection with August 4 incident in the upazila.
Md Harisur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC-investigation) of Chirirbandar Police Station, and Sub-Inspector Md Aminul Islam submitted two separate charge sheets to the Speedy Trial Tribunal yesterday.
Court sources said the hearing of the two cases will be held today.
Following a dispute over building a mosque by grabbing land beside a temple at Bolai Bazar near Rajapur village on August 4, thousands of people attacked the village on the day, violating Section 144.
At least 50 Hindus of the village were injured while 25 houses torched during the attack. Police had to fire blank shots tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
On August 7, Subhash Chandra Roy, son of Satish Chandra Roy of Rajapur village, filed a case with Chirirbandar Police Station against 200 people including Jamaat-backed upazila chairman Aftab Uddin Mollah.
Another case was filed by Dinesh Chandra Roy, son of Debi Prasad of adjoining Abdulpur village, on August 9, accusing 44 people including Aftab Uddin Mollah, also former ameer of Jamaat Dinajpur district unit.
Both the cases were filed under the Speedy Trial Act. Police submitted the charge sheets within 25 days of filing of the cases.
Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chirirbandar Police Station said Afteb Uddin Mollah has been absconding since August 4.
The OC told this correspondent that they would submit a charge-sheet in another case for attack on the village soon. Police, BGB and Rab members are still guarding the area.
