The nation will observe the historic Education Day today through various programmes chalked out by different student bodies and socio-cultural organisations. The day is observed commemorating the sacrifices of Mostafa, Babul, Wajiullah and other students who were killed in police shootout while staging a demonstration to establish the democratic rights of students, protesting against the then education commission formed during the Ayub Khan regime in 1962. On the occasion, wreaths will be placed at the Shikkha Odhikar Chattar pillar in front of Shiksha Bhaban in the capital around 8:00am today. Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree has organised a press conference at Madhur Canteen on Dhaka University (DU) campus marking the day. Bangladesh Students' Union will hold a rally before Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus at 11:00am. Other student organisations of DU will also hold programmes on the campus. On the eve, left-leaning student organisations announced continuous programmes to press home their demands. Besides, National Front of Teachers and Employees will hold a discussion at Jatiya Press Club at 11:00am where Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid will be present as chief guest. This year, the history Education Day marks the 50th anniversary of the students' movement against the education policy framed in 1962 by the Sharif Commission under Ayub Khan in the interest of the Pakistani rulers. The policy created backlash from students and their movement culminated on this day, forcing the then government to suspend the policy.
