Torture by employers sends domestic help to hospital

A minor domestic help was allegedly severely tortured by her employers in the capital's Khilgaon Banasree area, and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's (DMCH) One Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) yesterday. The victim Arjina Akhter, 14, daughter of Abdul Khaleque of Ostogram in Kishoreganj, had been working at a flat in Khilgaon of Dhaka. Arjina told reporters at DMCH that her employers used to inflict burn injury on her body in case of any mistake in her work, sometimes even only to make fun. They used to slap her, beat with stick, keep without providing food for long and confine her to a room, she said. Arjina's uncle Abu Saleh told The Daily Star that the employers sent back Arjina to her village home as she fell sick a few days back. Later, her parents took her to Ostogram Upazila Health Complex. But doctors at the health complex referred her to DMCH's OCC. The doctors also sent her to Ostogram Police Station. Mizanuzzaman, officer-in-charge at Ostogram Police Station, said they could not take the case as the incident did not occur in an area under the police station. He said they informed the mater to Khilgaon Police Station in Dhaka. The OC said they raised Tk 14,000 from local solvent people and sent her to Dhaka. Khilgaon Police Station OC Sirajul Islam said they were informed about the allegation. He said actions would be taken after getting information about the perpetrator of the crime.
