Govt During Polls
Parliament to decide form: CEC
The question of which form of government will supervise the next general election is a political issue which will be resolved in parliament, said Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday.
He was stating his reaction to journalists in the capital's Bangladesh Election Commission on the full Supreme Court verdict, released by the Appellate Division on Sunday night, declaring illegal the constitutional provision for a non-party caretaker government system.
The CEC said the present election commission was always ready to hold the general election within the 90-day limit.
As per the constitutional provisions, parliamentary elections must be held in 90 days preceding the dissolution of parliament.
In the verdict, former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque stressed the need for strengthening the Election Commission, saying all the officials involved in the polls should be controlled by the EC.
The CEC said necessary amendments would be brought to the Representation of People Order, 1972 to specify the authority the EC required to hold a fair election.
