The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills (BSRM) Tk 40.50 lakh on charge of cutting hill at Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong. Jafar Alam, divisional director of DoE in Chittagong, said they found the evidence that the BSRM cut a portion of a hill situated in its six acres land in Durgapur area of the upazila. M Firoz, head of marketing of BSRM, denied the allegation of hill-cutting, saying, "We bought the land in 2011 in present condition." "The previous owner might cut one portion of the hill,” he said adding that they have also fulfilled mitigation measures of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) of DoE.
