The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a dyeing factory Tk 25.62 lakh for polluting Shitalakhya river in Gazipur. A team of DoE found that the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of Argon Denims was partially shut and liquid waste was being dumped into the river, said a DoE press release. Laboratory tests found that the liquid was hazardous for environment and ecology. The DoE also found that the factory dumped 8 crore litres of toxic effluent into the river in the past six months. Munir Chowdhury, director of DoE, ordered the company to keep ETP operational round the clock. Anwarul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, managing director of the company, said the disposal pipe of the ETP was temporarily disconnected for an expansion work. The DoE team went on an inspection right at that time, he added.
