Home minister rejects US call for dialogue

Home Minister MK Alamgir yesterday rejected a call by the US to resolve political differences through dialogue. "What is the necessity of talks with those who believe in militancy and in killing people? …we would definitely have discussions with them if they spoke of ways to expand the formula of the rule of law. “But those who are dacoits, those who kill people, those do not hesitate to attack the country's law minister without any reason, what is the use of dialogues with them? “Let us crush them first then other issues can come up,” he said after a meeting with US Under Secretary of State Maria Otero and US Ambassador Dan W Mozena at his office. A statement of the US embassy yesterday expressed concern at the recent violence across Bangladesh and urged for dialogue for resolving differences. “The ability to engage in peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right; there is no justification for the resort to violence. We believe dialogue is the best means for resolving differences,” it said.
