Man gets 60 years in jail for abduction, rape
A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a man to 60 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping a class VII student of Kishnakumari City Corporation Girls High School, after abducting her on February 28, 1997.
The court also ordered him to pay Tk 1 lakh fine to Chittagong's deputy commissioner, who will give the money to the victim.
Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Md Rezaul Karim pronounced the verdict in the presence of the convict, Manju Mia, said court sources.
The court acquitted nine others accused in the case as the allegations against them were not proved.
Public Prosecutor Chandan Talukder said, “The allegations against Manju were proved beyond a doubt, therefore, the court sentenced him to 60 years' imprisonment and fined him.”
Manju was given 30 years for abduction and another 30 years for rape, he added.
The acquitted are Manju's sisters -- Shanu Begum, Sakhina Begum and Sufia Begum, his friend Ramjan, Anwar Mia, Alamgir, Yusuf, Md Alamgir and Anwar Hossain.
On February 28, 1997, the victim was taken to a flat on Chittagong Railway Station Road, where Manju rapped her.
Following the incident, the victim's older brother lodged the case with the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on March 10.
