Speakers at a workshop yesterday called on the government to include domestic helps in the labour law to ensure the workers' rights to health and basic education. They said domestic workers need protection at workplaces while the Bangladeshi expatriates working in different countries also need security. So, they urged the government to soon enact the “Domestic Worker Protection and Welfare Policy 2010” and ratify the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 189 to ensure the protection for domestic workers worldwide and take Bangladesh ahead in the international labour market. Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) arranged the workshop at Cirdap auditorium in the capital, said a press release. Lawmaker Israfil Alam, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was present as the chief guest. BILS Chairman Habibur Rahman Siraj presided over the workshop, the release added.
