13 Jamaat-Shibir men held
At least 13 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir were arrested yesterday on charges of attacking police and vandalising and torching public property in Narayanganj, Chittagong and Gaibandha.
The fresh arrests raised the tally to 80 in the last three days in the country.
Narayanganj police arrested eight activists of Jamaat and Shibir raiding different areas across the district. They are Delwar Hossain, Nurul Haq, Shamsul Alam, Hafez Mohammad, Hasan Ali Bablu, Ramjan, Abdur Rahim and Shoyebur Rahman.
Meanwhile, a Narayanganj court yesterday granted two days' remand for district Shibir President Nasirullah, district Jamaat Finance Secretary Jubaid, Shamsul Haq, Tajul Islam, and Nurunnabi and one day's remand for Neyamat Ullah, Kamal Hossain, Abdus Salam, Mushfiqur Rahman and Nazir in two separate cases filed by police.
In Chittagong, police arrested four Shibir activists along with banned books, posters, leaflets and CDs in Fatikchhari upazila for anti-state campaigning and attempt to create anarchy.
The detainees--Rashedul Rased, 26, Mozammel Hossain, 25, Jahed Hossain, 26 and Shahed Hossain, 24--hail from the upazila's Uttar Dhurang village.
Police arrested them while they were slapping posters on the walls in the area, which contained the demand of release of the arrested Jamaat leaders, said MA Sabur, officer-in-charge of Fatikchhari Police Station.
Police also seized some banned Islamist books, posters, leaflets and CDs from them, he said. A case was lodged with the police station in this regard, he added.
Sunderganj police in Gaibandha arrested one Rafiqul Islam, secretary of Sunderganj municipality unit Jamaat and assistant super of Sunderganj Sadar Dakhil Madrasa.
Police said Rafiqul was accused in a case filed by police during the countrywide agitation programme on September 30 when they attacked cops injuring eleven persons, including five police. Police had filed the case against 500 leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance in this connection.
Rafiqul was arrested at Government Model Primary School.
