Teachers, students and officials of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) went on an indefinite strike from Monday demanding removal of vice chancellor Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury. Expressing solidarity with the agitating students and teachers, seven teachers and high officials of the university resigned from their administrative posts in the last two days. Pro-Awami League teachers, officials and students of the university under the banner of 'Progatisheel Chhatra-Shikkhak-karmakarta-karmachari Oikkya Parishad' yesterday boycotted all academic and administrative activities to press home their demand, campus sources said. After laying siege to the administration building, they also staged demonstrations on campus from 8:00am to 2:00pm. The protesting students and teachers claimed that the VC was involved in large irregularities in academic and administrative works. They alleged the VC had upgraded the result of a final year student to CGPA 3.00 from 2.97. The platform of agitating students and teachers further alleged that Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury did not take any initiative to complete construction of the Shaheed Minar on campus during his tenure. The agitators threatened to continue their strike until the VC is removed from his post. Sources said the teachers, students and officials have been demonstrating since November 13 to press home their demand but they had postponed their programmes from November 16 to November 25 due to admission tests. Contacted, Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury denied the allegations and said some people are conspiring to bring him down.
