Prayer for remand of 5 Amar Desh staff rejected

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected a prayer for a one-day remand of the daily Amar Desh's four journalists and an employee in a case of assault on police. The case was filed against them for assaulting and obstructing police from taking the daily's acting editor, Mahmudur Rahman, into custody on June 1, 2010. For whom the remand was sought are Amar Desh Executive Editor and Jatiya Press Club General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmad, the daily's News Editor Jahed Chowdhury, Chief Assistant Editor Sanjeeb Chowdhury, Senior Staff Reporter Alauddin Arif and Office Assistant Saiful Islam. The court passed the order directing the accused to supply their correct and full names and addresses to the investigation officer within seven days. On October 21, Tejgaon police Sub-Inspector Apurba Hassan and also the IO sought a one-day remand. Apurba said he prayed for the bails to be cancelled and take the five on remand to glean information about their correct and full names and addresses for the sake of proper investigation.
