War Crimes Trial

Court orders Sayedee's counsels to end arguments today

Staff Correspondent
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT) yesterday ordered defence counsels of Delawar Hossain Sayedee to complete placement of arguments by today. The three-member tribunal on Tuesday had closed defence arguments and ordered prosecution to place their counter arguments. However, following a prayer from the defence counsels, the tribunal extended the time until today. In the prayer, defence counsel Mizanul Islam said defence could not come to the tribunal on Tuesday due to sudden unavoidable circumstances and sought opportunity to place their arguments. Mizanul then began placing arguments against the charges pressed against Sayedee. He said that prosecution in their documents has completely failed to prove Sayedee as a member of auxiliary force during the Liberation War in 1971. Submitting certified copies of record of rights of Sayedee's property, prosecutor Syed Haidar Ali yesterday prayed the tribunal to take these documents into judicial notice. Mizanul said they want to submit a prayer countering the prosecution's petition. Following the hearing of the petition, the tribunal said both the prayers will be kept in record and considered during the judgement. Sayedee was produced before the tribunal. He faces 20 charges for his alleged involvement in the crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
