Demanding resignation of the government, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into the graft allegation regarding Padma bridge project proved that the government was corrupt. “The probe report revealed everything. Efforts are going on to lodge cases against those involved except for former communications minister Syed Abul Hossain and prime minister's economic affairs adviser Mashiur Rahman. But we believe the name of Abul Hossain should be included,” he said at a discussion meeting. Marking democracy restoration day, Ducsu (Dhaka University Central Students' Union) and all party students' unity of 90 organised the meeting at Jatiya Press Club. On this day in 1990 former military ruler HM Ershad was ousted from power. Fakhrul claimed that ACC's report mentioned the former communications minister's name in the list for those involved in corruption and so the government should resign on ethical grounds without further delay. Referring to prime minister's allegation that BNP does not want trial of war criminals, Fakhrul said BNP wants the trial to take place but there must be justice. “The trial procedure should be transparent and it should not be for political vengeance or cleaning out the opposition,” the BNP leader said.
