Jamaat movement won't hamper war crimes trial
Says law minister
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said the ongoing trial of war crimes will not be hampered by the movement of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Jamaat men are carrying out subversive activities by attacking police and setting vehicles on fire because they are not in favour of trying the accused of crimes against humanity, the law minster said.
He made the remarks at a press briefing at his office. State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam was also present there.
Shafique said the trial is going on as per law to establish rule of law, bring an end to the culture of impunity, ensure justice for the victims of the Liberation War and free the nation from stigma.
He said the International Crimes Tribunals are holding the trials in an independent, transparent and fair manner.
The defence counsels are getting the facilities of cross examining the prosecution witnesses for a long time, and the accused can engage lawyers as per their choices to defend themselves, said Shafique Ahmed.
Appeals can be moved before the Supreme Court against the tribunals' verdicts, he said, adding that there was no such facility of moving appeals against the verdicts in other places including Nuremberg.
The minister also said that there was no scope to raise any question about the transparency and standard of the ongoing war crimes trial.
