Terming Bangladesh's constitution one of the world's finest documents, Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, a High Court judge, yesterday said the judiciary enjoys the highest respect of people. “It is often said that the judiciary is the weakest of the three state organs. It has neither the power of the sword like the executive nor the power of the purse like the legislature, yet it enjoys the highest respect of the people,” he said in a written statement at a discussion in the capital's Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (Bilia) auditorium. Bilia organised the discussion celebrating Bangladesh's constitution's 40th anniversary. “As it (the constitution) is the source of legitimacy of all actions, legislative, executive or judicial, no action shall be valid unless it is in conformity with the constitution both in letter and spirit,” he said. Bilia Alternative President Dr M Zahir chaired the discussion where former chief information commissioner Muhammad Zamir and Additional Attorney General MK Rahman also spoke.
