Why flyover collapse victims shouldn't be compensated
HC asks authorities
The High Court yesterday asked the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to give adequate compensations to the family members of the deceased and to the injured in the Bahaddarhat flyover collapse incident.
On November 24, three concrete girders of the under-construction flyover collapsed on a kitchen market in Chittagong city, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others.
Yesterday, the HC issued the rule asking the authorities to explain why their inaction to prevent the incident should not be declared illegal.
In the rule, the court ordered the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to monitor the rest of the flyover's construction work by skilled engineers to ensure safety measures at the construction site.
It also directed them to submit a report on what steps they have taken in this regard within a month.
Secretaries to the ministries of communications, and local government and rural development (LGRD) and cooperatives; deputy commissioner of Chittagong, the flyover's project director and its construction firm Mir Akhtar and Parisa Trade System Limited have been made respondents to the rule.
The court came up with the rule and order after hearing of a writ petition filed on November 26 by one Raihanul Mustafa of Moheskhali in Cox's Bazar.
