No possibility of poll engineering: Dr Kamal

Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday ruled out any possibility of election engineering in the next general election. “The next general election will not be a controlled one; rather it will be free, fair and neutral,†he said while addressing a seminar at the Jatiya Press Club. Nagorik Oikya arranged the seminar titled "Present situation and the election system." Dr Kamal said people will boycott those who reaped the benefits of a system in the 2008 general election and are now saying that they will not let anyone to enjoy it anymore. “People are united. No one can deceive them as they truly want representative democracy and [effective] parliament.†He condemned the killing of Biswajit Das by the BCL activists during Sunday's road blockade enforced by the BNP-led 18 party alliance. The eminent jurist said the killers of the innocent young man and those ordered the killing have committed serious crimes. About the ongoing war crimes trial, the Gano Forum chief said there is no scope for a debate over the issue, and underscored the need for speedy completion of the trial. Communist Party of Bangladesh President Mujahidul Islam Selim, eminent jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik and former state minister for information Prof Abu Sayeed, among others, spoke at the event with Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna was in the chair.
