Inter-district gang leader Kalu, 5 associates arrested

Police early yesterday arrested the alleged top leader of an inter-district robbery gang “Kalu Bahini” in Chittagong with his five accomplices following a gunfight with the gang in the district's Hathazari upazila. The police also seized six locally made guns, two machetes and an iron rod from their possession, police sources said. The arrestees were identified as Sabedul Haque alias Kalu, 33, the top leader of the gang, hailing from Bhujpur upazila of Chittagong; and his accomplices M Solaiman, 40, Nezam, 28, Jashimuddin (1), 35, Jashimuddin (2), 28, and Abu Hanif, 32. The arrested people and two policemen, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Hathazari Circle AFM Nizamuddin, sustained splinter injuries in the clash, the sources said. ASP Nizamuddin and Hathazari police Sub-inspector Hanif Al Mahmud, were given primary treatment. On secret information that the gang comprising around 18 members was preparing to commit robbery on the bank of Koria Dighi at Fatika village in Hathazari, the police cordoned off the area at around 3:30am, said the ASP. Sensing the presence of police, the gang opened fire on the law enforcers forcing them to fire back. The robbers fired around 20 rounds of bullet while the police fired 16 rounds, added the ASP. At one stage, the police managed to catch six of the robbers including Kalu while the others fled the scene. A case was lodged with the police in this regard. Police are interrogating the arrestees, said Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station. “Kalu Bahini” has been involved in robbery on Chittagong-Rangamati and Chittagong-Khagrachhari highways as well as in Hathazari, Shitakunda, Bhujpur, Fatikchhari in Chittagong for long, police sources said. “Their (robbers) activities have increased recently and they committed several robberies in the district in the last two months. Every arrestee is the accused in several cases lodged with different police stations in the district,” said ASP Nizam.
