270 Jamaat-Shibir men sued

Police filed two cases against 270 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir regarding their clashes with police on Monday in Kodomtoli and Shibganj areas of Sylhet which left at least 25 injured including 7 policemen. The activists also vandalised and torched a police van on the day of the clashes. Amar Chandra Ray, sub-inspector of Shahporan Police Station, filed one case accusing 150 activists for vandalising and torching the van and for attacking police in Shibganj. Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of the police station, said eight of the accused have already been arrested. The other case was filed by Ebad Ullah of Dakshin Surma Police Station against 120 Jamaat and Shibir activists for clashes in Kodomtoli area. Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Dakshin Surma Police Station, said three of the accused have been caught regarding the case where 120 were accused among them 32 were named. Till yesterday morning police arrested a total of 11 accused in connection with the two cases. Police exploded 10 grenades, fired four tear-gas shells, and fired bullets to bring the situation under control, said a police source. Meanwhile, Sylhet division's Jamaat on Monday afternoon called for an 8-hour hartal today demanding release of Jamaat's central acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, who was arrested last week in Dhaka.
