Police arrested an absconding convict with life sentence in a murder case at Sikderpara in Satkania upazila of Chittagong early yesterday. Abu Taher, 45, went into hiding after getting bail from a Chittagong court in 2001 in an arms case, said police. He was arrested with a gun and five cartridges in 1994. The Chittagong court sentenced Taher to 17 years rigorous imprisonment in the arms case in 2009 and another court gave him life term imprisonment in former UP chairman Aminur Islam murder case in 2010 in absentia. Sub-inspector Pravat Karmakar of Satkania Police Station told The Daily Star that Taher went to Saudi Arabia and returned to Bangladesh last month. Taher met his family members on Monday night, said Pravat. Acting on a tip-off, police raided his house around 12:15am and arrested him, he said. Aminur Islam, a former chairman of Sonakania Union Parishad, was killed in 2004.
