Ex-UP member beaten to death
A former union parishad member was allegedly beaten to death over land dispute under Banaripara upazila of Barisal yesterday.
The victim was Hari Mohon Gharami, 75, was a former member of Baishari Union Parishad.
Police arrested three accused -- Himangshu, Ranjit and Asit -- from the neighbour Sanyamat family in this connection, said Mezbahuddin, officer-in-charge of Banaripara Police Station.
Family and police sources said Mohon went to pluck some coconuts from a garden on the disputed land in Baishari when a group from the Sanyamat family, comprising the three, Elvin and Irin, beat him indiscriminately with sticks.
Mohon's family rushed him to upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police sent the body to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Son of the victim, Amal Krishna Gharami, lodged a murder case with the police station accusing eight of the family.
