5 stevedores held for stealing ship equipment
Bangladesh Coast Guard detained five dockworkers of a foreign merchant vessel in the Bay of Bengal on charge of stealing equipment from the ship yesterday.
They are Sanaullah, 32, Kacchan Das, 31, of Chittagong; Al Amin, 23, Shafiqul, 29, of Mongla; and Khaledur Rahman, 28, of Jessore.
Lt Commander Mamunur Rashid, anti-smuggling company commander of the Coast Guard (East Zone), said the stevedores stole a chain block on January 16, and a 10 metre berthing houser early yesterday.
The Liberian ship, MV Daina Bolten, has a crew of 20 sailors, including Capt Sadat Okai, who informed the coast guard of the stealing.
The stevedores tried to con the crew, saying robbers were about to attack the vessel and the sailors should hide themselves inside the ship that made the captain suspicious on them, Rashid added.
"We are trying to recover the stolen items of the ship," he said.
The detainees claimed that the items were robbed at a gun-point from them, said the guard personnel.
