Says Tariqul
Unb, Dhaka
BNP spokesperson Tariqul Islam yesterday said the government cannot stop the ongoing movement by resorting to repressive acts, intimidation and arresting the opposition leaders and activists. “The government would not be able to stop the movement even by putting all the opposition leaders in jail as people are ready to fight against this government,” he said. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been shown arrested in fresh cases to keep him in jail, he added. Tariqul made the remarks when addressing a discussion at Maulana Bhashani Auditorium in the capital. Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal arranged the programme marking the 77th birth anniversary of BNP founder late president Ziaur Rahman. Mentioning that people have already shown their no-confidence in the current regime by their spontaneous participation in the BNP-led 18-party's human wall programmes on Tuesday, Tariqul said the government is still trying cling to power although it has lost trust of people. Calling upon people to take to the streets against the government, he said, “Now the back has been pushed against the wall. Let us fight a do-or-die battle against this government to free the besieged democracy.” With Krishak Dal General Secretary Shamsuzzaman Dudu in the chair, BNP Vice-Chairman Selima Rahman, its Dhaka city unit member secretary Abdus Salam and Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, spoke on the occasion.
