Power generation likely to exceed demand this yr

BSS, Dhaka
Electricity generation is likely to exceed demand by the end of this year as 18 under construction power plants will start feeding the national grid a total of 2147 megawatt (MW) in phases, bringing much- expected respite to the people. As per the plan, installation of 18 large, medium and small power plants with power generation capacity from the minimum 50 MW to maximum 335 MW will be completed by 2013 boosting the power generation capacity of the Power Development Board (PDB) to 8647 MW from the existing 6350 MW, said a PDB official. He said the demand of electricity generally varies from 5500 MW to 6000 MW daily but it goes up to maximum 6700-6800 MW during peak-summer. According to the Power Division, a total of 57 agreements have been signed for implementation of 59 power projects having a total generation capacity of 7,738 MW from January 2009 to December 2012. Of the 59 power projects, 32 plants having a total generation capacity of 2,751 MW are now producing electricity and installation of 27 plants with the generation capacity of 4,987 MW are now under implementation. Meanwhile, the PDB completed maintenance and overhauling of 13 major power units with a total generation capacity of 1399 MW. The power plants include Ashuganj (Unit-3/150 MW) and Siddirganj (210 MW), Ashuganj (Unit-1/68 MW), Ghorashal (Unit 2/55 MW) and Kaptai (Unit 3), Ghorashal (unit 6/210 MW) and Haripur (Unit 3/32 MW).
