3-day <i>haor</i> festival begins in Netrakona

Three-day long National Haor Festival-2008 began at the auditorium of Mohongonj Degree College in Netrakona district yesterday afternoon. Traditional kissa (story-telling) and folk songs jari, sari, bhatiali and palligiti marked the inaugural session of the festival. Lathi khela, ha-du-du and a football tournament were also arranged on the occasion. Noted writer Mohammad Zafar Iqbal inaugurated the festival organised by Paribesh Bachao Andolon (Save the environment movement). "Our environment will face a predictable danger if we cannot protect the water bodies,” Abu Naser, convenor of Paribesh Bachao Andolon said. Urging the government to form a haor development board, he said, “We will arrange haor festival at least two times every year in different haor areas of the country to draw the government's attention towards development of haor.” Mohonganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Abed Hossen presided over the inaugural function. Rasheda K Chowdhury, Mass Education and Cultural Affairs Adviser, and Manik Lal Samaddar, special assistant to the chief adviser, will be present at the function today.
