Free fishermen from <i>mohajans</i>
Seminar told at Barisal
Participants at a day-long seminar here yesterday urged the government to frame a fishermen-friendly fishery policy to improve their lot and develop open water fish resources in the country.
They also urged the government to give loan to fishermen like farmers, which will save them from the clutches of moneylenders.
Community Development Centre (CODEC) organized the seminar with assistances from district fishery department and NGO Manusher Jonno Foundation. It was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner, marking the 'Fishery Resources Development Campaign' launched on Saturday.
The seminar was inaugurated by Barisal Deputy Commissioner Manjur E Ilahi. Md. Israil Pundit, member of CODEC and central president of Khudra Matsayajibi Samity was in the chair. District fishery Officer Md. Abdul Aziz was the special guest.
Dr. Hamidul Huq, chairman of Institute of Livelihood Studies (ILS) moderated the seminar participated by over 40 people including grass root level fishermen, journalists, lawyers, fishery and youth development officials, fish merchants and bank officials.
The lot of fishermen can be changed and fishery resources developed if fishermen can be freed from the clutches of mohajans, they said.
