'Parties' registration with EC a must for transparency'
Speakers at a roundtable here yesterday said political parties should be registered with the Election Commission to be transparent and accountable to people.
Parliament members are elected by the people and for the people and so they must be liable to the people.
People have the right to know about income, their sources, wealth and education of their representatives and whether they are defaulter in paying income tax, bank loans, service charges and other dues, they said.
Transparency International, Rangpur unit, organised the day-long dialogue, presided over by Sadrul Alam Dulu. It was held at the police lines.
The discussants included former Principal of Carmichael College Dr. Rezaul Hoque, convener of Rangpur Nagorik Committee Mohammad Afzal, Rangpur Jatiya Party secretary Mostafizar Rahman, Freedom Fighter Mozaffar Hosen Chad, woman rights activist Marhamatunnechha, Principal of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry School and College Abdul Jalil and cultural activist Mafizul Islam Mantu.
Rangpur TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekhar Zaman moderated the dialogue titles 'Citizen Charter for Parliament and Parliament Members'.
They also demanded formulation of a code of conduct for parliament members while deliberating in the House.
“No party should boycott parliament under any circumstances. There, , they should talk people's welfare and country's interest, not abuse each other”, said Prof Abdul Jalil.
Politics should be the job of politicians, not of businessmen. If this can be establishes, use of money and muscle power will reduce to a great extent, the speakers said.
