Ex-PSC member Prof Mahfuzur Rahman loses BAU job
Syndicate expels one student for life, another for a year for assaulting teacher
The Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Syndicate at a meeting yesterday dismissed Prof Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman from service for long absence from work and took action against two students for attack on a teacher.
The decisions were taken at a Syndicate meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain in the chair.
Prof. Rahman, a former memner of Public Service Commissaion (PSC), is on the run following filing of a case by Anti Corruption Commission for his alleged corruption while a PSC member during BNP government, sources said.
The sources said he was earlier served with a notice to explain his long absence within seven days. The action was taken yesterday as he failed to explain, the sources said.
The two students who were punished are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League. Dipak Kumar Paul, an MS student of Agronomy Department of Agriculture Faculty was expelled for life from the university and Biman Chandra Roy, another MS student of Animal Science Department of Animal Husbandry Faculty, was expelled for a year. The Syndicate also declared them unwanted on the BAU campus.
The students assaulted Assistant Professor Md. Wakilur Rahman of Rural Sociology Department and house tutor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall in the early hours of August 29.
Protesting the assault, BAU Teachers Council demanded punishment of those involved in the attack. The teachers had also brought out a silent procession on the campus wearing black badges and 37 house tutors of B AU submitted their resignation letters to hall provosts protesting the incident.
On contact, Prof. Dr. Monjurul Alam, Secretary of BAU Teachers' Council, told this correspondent that the actions against tnen two students were taken as per recommendations of a three-memnber probe committee.
Despite repeated attempts, neither VC Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain nor Register Nazibur Rahman could be contacted for details.
Following the probe body report, the authorities served show cause notices on Dipak Kumar Paul and Biman Chandra Roy on August 2 as their involvement in the incident was primarily proved.
