Ransacking Carmichael College
All 16 Shibir men acquitted
A Rangpur court yesterday acquitted all of the 16 activists and leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir in the case for ransacking Carmichael College building and the house of a college teacher on February 6.
Senior Judicial Magistrate of Rangpur Mahmudul Islam declared the verdict.
Principal of Carmichael College Dipkendra Nath Das lodged a case against a number of unidentified students who ransacked the college building and house of Assistant Professor Hafizur Rahman.
Kotwali police identified 18 students of the college by tracking video footage on the incident and framed charges against them.
They were identified as Ershadul, Mahbub Delwar, Mohibul, Al Mamun, Ashraful, Ferdous, Mosharraf, Shahinur, Alfazur, Rezwan, Azizur, Zamil, Julfiqur, Mojid, Maidul, Masud, and Mahbuber Rahman. All of the accused in the charge sheet were leaders and activists of the college unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
The chief advisor on February 2 after the cabinet meeting in Rangpur declared that a full-fledged autonomous university would be set in Rangpur.
A number of students of the college became violent following the declaration of the chief advisor about setting up a university in Rangpur and ransacked the college building and house of the teacher on February 6. They demanded upgrading Carmichael College as a university.
