Jute workers bring out'coffin procession' in Khulna
Workers of the state-owned Crescent Jute Mills, Star Jute Mills and Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills brought out a 'coffin procession' at Khalishpur industrial belt in Khulna yesterday.
The procession was brought out as part of their weeklong programme to realise their 8-point demand.
Police intercepted the procession when it reached near the private-owned People's Jute Mills.
However, no untoward incident was reported.
Meanwhile, workers snapped electricity and water supply connections on Sunday protesting non-payment of their arrears.
This programme will continue for an indefinite period till realisation of their demands, Jute Mills Workers' Development Committee (JMWDC) convenor Gazi Masum said.
Sweepers and gardeners also began their work stoppage on Sunday as workers prevented them from entering the colonies and the administrative buildings.
The programme of workers' self-immolation on September 15 will remain unchanged if the demands are not met by September 14, JMWDC convenor said.
Meanwhile, project directors of seven state-owned jute mills of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt left Khulna for Dhaka yesterday in response to the call of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation chairman Ataharul Islam to review the situation.
