200 'controversial' staff stage sit-in at RU
About 200 'controversially-appointed' fourth-class employees of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday staged a one-hour sit-in demonstration in front of the administrative building demanding regularisation of jobs.
They also held a rally urging the chief adviser and the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman to take necessary steps for confirmation of their jobs. They said their families are living in misery. They also demanded resignation of acting vice chancellor (VC) Prof Mamnunul Keramat for failure to confirm their jobs.
They threatened to resist the Syndicate meeting of the university scheduled to be held today. They announced for continuation of their sit-in demonstration today.
Later, they brought out a procession on the campus and paraded its streets.
Afterwards, a group of employees met the VC, treasurer and registrar separately demanding their job regularisation.
When contacted, the acting VC said, 'We shall take up the matter seriously.'
A large number of police were deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident.
Earlier, the university authorities appointed 544 third and fourth-class employees against 255 vacant posts in 2004 in gross violation of the university rules. Jobs of about 300 employees were regularised during tenure of the BNP-Jamaat rule.
Later, High Court stayed the recruitment following a case.
