'Punish Shamima's torturer'
Leaders of different organisations have demanded punishment of the persecutor of UN award winner Shamima Khatun, now fighting for life at Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex. She was tortured by her husband on September 6 for protesting his extramarital affairs. Police on September 10 night arrested Shamima Khatun's husband Maniruzzaman Manir, after The Daily Star ran a report on the plight of Shamim Khatun, a winner of Global Micro Entrepreneurship Award offered by the UN. Shamim received grievous injuries by her husband on September 6 for protesting his extramarital affairs. A wholesaler of vegetables, Shamima was adjudged the winner of “The Most Innovative Business of the Year” organised by Citi Group Foundation and UN Capital Development Fund. She attended UN gala in New York as a representative of Bangladesh at the closing ceremony of the International Year of Micro-credit in 2005. Leaders and activists of different organisations visited Shamima at the hospital and expressed concern over the inhuman torture on her. Dilruba Rahman and Trishna Chakraborty, president and general secretary of Satkhira unit of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, in a statement on Friday demanded punishment of the torturer of Shamima Khatun and said their organisation will render legal aid to the victim. Leaders of several NGOs including Ganamukhi Sangstha also demanded punishment to the culprit. Contacted, Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-inCharge Abdur Razzak said they will make all-out efforts to investigate the matter properly to bring the culprit to book.
