DU incident

We expressed our strong disapproval of the countrywide violence and vandalism on the pretext of an isolated incident on the DU campus. What on earth made the students go on the rampage despite their demands being met by the government in a hasty manner by Tuesday (21.08.2007)? Anyone, being rational, cannot but term it a politically motivated demonstration of the frenzied people which only served the evil purposes of the power-hungry and corrupt politicians, who have been kept reined tightly for seven months. They just capitalised on a trivial matter. As for the incident, we observed, with a sense of great dismay, that the teachers of DU failed to play their due role. Rather, some politically biased teachers added fuel to the incident. Had their role been positive, the incident could have been nipped in the bud. It was really unbecoming on their part. The role of a section of the print and electronic media, on the other hand , was not worth praising. It seemed to us that they tended to present the entire situation, even after it took a destructive shape, as a spontaneous protest. But it no longer remained a students' protest when they were obliged to resort to violence. Finally, we must say the demand of immediate withdrawal of emergency stemming from this incident was, by no means, acceptable. However, no one wants an un-elected government coupled with emergency for good. And no government was able to live fully up to our expectations . But it is, indeed , true that we the common people are better now in every sense. So, is it not logical to prefer peace and order in all spheres of public life to terrorism, vandalism, chaos, corruption, extortion and deprivation of all kinds in the name of democracy ?
