Election 2008Tangail-3, 6
Deprived AL leaders to run independent
Ticket deprived Awami League leaders in Tangail-3 and Tangail-6 constituencies have decided to contest in the upcoming parliament election independently as nomination of new faces in the two seats has created sharp reaction among party men.
Tangail district AL President Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan and AL leader Khandakar Baten, who were aspirants for party tickets from Tangail-3 and Tangail-6 seats, lost the last election with small margins.
The AL, which lost six of eight parliamentary seats in Tangail in 2001 elections, could not close its rank and file in the district this time also as the party has nominated new faces in three of the eight seats in the district.
Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan has submitted his nomination paper as an independent candidate from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) where the party nominated Dr Motiur Rahman Chowdhury.
Earlier the grassroots party men of the constituency sent a panel of five persons including veteran leader Shajahan to the parliamentary board for selecting a nominee for the constituency but nomination was given to Motiur who was not in the list, party sources said.
In Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar), ticket deprived AL leader Khandakar Baten has submitted nomination paper as an independent candidate while party nominated Ahsanul Islam Titu, commerce and industries secretary of the district AL.
Freedom fighter Baten, who has reputation as an honest leader, was defeated in the last election with difference of only 1,878 votes when AL leader Golam Mohammad Khan Tareque sliced away 16,462 votes as independent candidate.
