IU Teachers, Students Warn

Resolve VC issue or face agitation

Our Correspondent, Kushtia
The teachers association and different students organisations yesterday asked the Islamic University (IU) authorities to resolve the month-long stalemate over appointment of a vice-chancellor (VC) by today or face tougher agitation. The university is running without VC since January 15. At a press conference held at the university, the Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) warned that they would launch a tougher programme if their demand is not met within the deadline. About a week ago, the IUTA gave a 7-day ultimatum demanding appointment of a new VC which ends today. IUTA urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who is also chancellor of the university to intervene and ensure early appointment of a new VC as the university is facing a virtual deadlock. IUTA at a meeting yesterday discussed their next course of action which includes rally, memorandum to university chancellor and even class boycott in case the authorities rejected their demand. The student organisations that staged agitation yesterday are Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Bangaldesh Chhatra Union (BCU) and Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree (BCM).
