Jubo League leader forcibly drops tender after schedule

A Jubo League leader and his associates on Thursday broke seal of the tender box to forcibly drop tender after expiry of the scheduled time at Barisal Veterinary Institute. A tender worth Tk 82 thousand was called for repair work of Sidr-damaged boundary wall of Barisal Veterinary Institute and the last time for dropping the tender expired at 12:00 noon on Thursday, sources said. “I along with other teachers and contractors were waiting for opening the sealed tender box at Barisal Veterinary Institute at 12:30pm,” said Dr AKM Mustafa Zaman, dean of animal science and veterinary faculty of Patuakhali Science and Technology University. That time a contractor, later identified as Liton Kazi, vice president of Babuganj upazila Jubo League and brother of upazila AL President Kazi Emdadul Huq Dulal, came to the room and demanded chance to drop tender. As the time had expired, members of the tender committee declined to accept the demand. Then Liton hurled abuses at Dr Mustafa Zaman and others, removed the seal of the tender box and forcibly dropped his tender in presence of police. “We remained silent and inactive during the chaos as the dean present at the spot did not request us to take any action,” said Assistant sub inspector (ASI) of Babuganj Police Station Sarwar Hossian who was on duty at the spot.
