Ruet, RMC to reopen April 26

Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) and Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) will reopen on April 26. The decision was taken at a meeting at Rajshahi Circuit House auditorium yesterday with Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan in the chair. The meeting imposed restrictions on rallies, processions and political activities of the student bodies on the Ruet and RMC campuses for an indefinite period. Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha, RU VC Prof Abdus Sobhan, Pro-VC Muhammad Nurullah, Ruet VC Prof Fazlul Bari, Rajshahi Medical College Principal Prof ABM Abdul Hannan, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shefaul Karim, Rajshhai Government College Principal Prof Abdul Mazid, Police Commissioner Mahbub Mohsin, Additional Police Commissioner Hafizur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner Sazzadur Rahman and heads of the other educational institutions were present at the meeting organised by the district administration. Ruet and RMC were closed sine die on March 13 following a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) on Rajshahi University (RU) campus that left Shibir leader Nomani killed and 100 others from the two groups injured. The meeting also decided to reopen the other educational institutions as soon as possible and sought co-operation of the law enforcing agencies in maintaining peaceful atmosphere on the campuses. Meeting sources said RCC Mayor Liton urged the RU vice-chancellor to immediately convene a meeting of the academic council to reopen the university within the first week of May. He also requested the heads of the other educational institutions to reopen those after discussing with teachers and student leaders. Emerging from the meeting, Mayor Liton announced that Ruet and RMC will reopen on April 26 while Rajshahi Government College on May 6. Talking to the reporters, Divisional Commissioner Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan said all resident and non-resident students must carry their identity cards during their stay on the campus and dormitories. He asked police personnel to arrest the outsiders who enter the educational institutions to create chaos. The meeting stressed the need for joint efforts of the teachers, students and law enforcers to maintain a congenial academic atmosphere at the educational institutions. Meanwhile, Ruet authorities at an emergency meeting in the evening decided to reopen the residential halls on April 25. The authorities imposed restrictions on rallies, processions and political activities of the student organisations on the campus indefinitely. Vice-Chancellor Prof Fazlul Bari sought cooperation of all including, teachers, students and employees, in running the university smoothly.
