Leaders and activists of Satkhira Unnayan Jubo Sangram Parishad on Monday brought out a procession and held a rally to press their 14-point demand for development of the district. Over 400 leaders and activists of the a newly formed organisation paraded the main thoroughfares in the town and held the rally on Satkhira Collectorate premises. Speakers at the rally urged the government to take up more projects and allocate more funds in the next national budget for development of 'neglected' Satkhira. They criticised successive governments for doing little for the district, which is earning 'huge' amount of foreign currency by exporting shrimps and also supplying resources from the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove in the world. Later they submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the deputy commissioner (DC). The 14-pt demand includes setting up a medical college and an agriculture college, upgrading Satkhira government college into a university college, pipeline gas supply, construction of a by-pass road on the western side of Satkhira town, infrastructural development of Bhomra landport, creation of a tourist spot at Munshiganj, conservation of the largest mangrove Sundarbans and re-excavation of silted river Kabodak.
