5 BNP men jailed for illegal arms, violence

A Barisal court yesterday sentenced five BNP cadres to 17 years imprisonment each for possessing illegal arms and launching an armed attack on the activists of 14-party alliance at Banaripara upazila headquarters in 2006. The convicts are Imran Howlader, Shahin, Anisur Rahman, Abdur Rahman and Sumon Howlader. First Additional District and Sessions Judge Siddiqul Arefin pronounced the judgment in presence of the five. According to the prosecution, the armed BNP cadres attacked a procession of 14-party alliance in front of Banaripara Upazila Health Complex on October 29, 2006, leaving eight activists of the alliance injured. The law enforcers arrested the five on the spot with arms and ammunition. Later, Sub-Inspector (SI) Masud of Banaripara Police Station lodged a case against the arrestees.
