4 hurt as pro-AL, BNP transport workers clash

Indefinite strike snaps road links with Lalmonirhat

Four leaders and activists of Sramik League were injured in a clash with pro-BNP transport workers over recruiting drivers for Dhaka-bound coaches at Lalmonirhat bus terminal yesterday morning. Demanding arrest of the attackers on Sramik League men, district Motor Sramik Union transport workers organisation started an indefinite transport strike yesterday, snapping road communication between Lalmonirhat district and other parts of the country. The injured in yesterday's clash -- district Motor Sramik Union President and Sramik League leader Aminul Islam, 42, district Motor Sramik Union Secretary and Sramik League leader Bulbul Ahamed, 38, Sramik League workers Jamal Mollah, 38, and Hamidul Islam, 32, were taken to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital. As the four people went to the bus terminal for a talk with the pro-BNP transport leaders and workers about recruitment of drivers for Dhaka-bound coaches, pro-BNP men led by Jalal Uddin attacked them with local-made weapons, injuring them seriously, police quoted the injured as saying. Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Foyezur Rahaman said a case was lodged against eight people including Jalal Uddin. The accused went into hiding after the clash, he added.
