15 outlaws get life for murder

A Barisal court yesterday sentenced 15 outlaws to life imprisonment for killing a woman in Uzirpur upazila of the district in 2004. The convicts are Jalil, Sultan, Faruk, Masum, Samad, Akbar, Nurul Islam, Dulal, Yusuf, Abdul Khalek, Alauddin, Alamin, Yasin, Sohel and Shahid. Of them, five are now in jail while the rest have been absconding since filing of the case. The court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, in default, they are to suffer three more months in jail. After examining 23 witnesses and evidence, First Additional District Judge Siddikul Arefin Chowdhury pronounced the verdict. According to the prosecution, about 30 cadres of outlawed Sarbahara Party men, led by Monirul Islam Nobin, stormed into the house of Sufia Begum in search of his son Kazi Shah Alam on the night of November 9, 2004. Failing to get Alam at the house, the outlaws shot Sufia dead. Alam filed a murder case with Uzirpur Police Station the following day. After investigation, Sub-Inspector Rakibuzzaman submitted a charge sheet against the accused on December 12, 2005. The court also acquitted Nobin as he was killed in a 'shootout' with the law enforcers in 2006.
