A Proud Industry in Peril
Prabir Das
Threadwork and Handloom industry, which once was a thriving sector in Bangladesh, is on the verge of becoming extinct due to the abundance of imported clothing in the domestic market. A lot of weavers have left their profession to make a living. But those who are still trying to adhere to this family tradition are facing hardship and poverty. How much longer they will be able to continue this business is uncertain. They need cooperation from the government and the private sector. The photos were taken from Miankhan of Bakulia, Chittagong.
