Art on the Wall
Street art, street painting or graffiti is regarded highly in the western world. The heritage, history and culture are reflected in the street art of a nation. Street art was highly popular as a medium of protest in European or American (including Latin America) countries, and it still is. In contrast, in Asian countries it has gained popularity at a much slower pace. However, street art is not a total stranger to Asian streets, specially in Bangladesh where 'alpana' is being used from a long time. Apart from 'alpana ', other forms of drawings are gradually emerging in our streets. In Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka, it is used as a medium of protest. In the campuses of public universities, it continues to reflect the political unrest and the protests of the student community. Later on, I noticed that in the streets of posh areas like Gulshan and Banani, instead of capturing social injustice, it signifies the affluent lifestyle of the rich and the privileged. In some places, it is also used for advertisements.
