10 hurt as two AL factions clash in Natore

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing dominance in Natore yesterday. 

The clash took place during a meeting at the office of the district AL.

Former cabinet secretary Kabir bin Anwar and local lawmaker Shafiqul Islam Shimul were present at the meeting. At one stage, a clash broke out between the supporters of the lawmaker and district AL general secretary Shariful Islam Ramzan.

At least 10 people were injured in the incident. Later, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.

Shariful Islam told The Daily Star, "The district Chhatra League president and other leaders were also present at the meeting. MP Shimul's supporters attacked them."

MP Shimul told this newspaper, "District Chhatra League president Farhad bin Aziz started the clash. But nothing serious happened. We have resolved the matter in the presence of the former cabinet secretary."

Farhad bin Aziz said, "When we sat down, the MP's people came forward and tried to create a chaotic situation. I told them to sit instead of creating chaos. Then they threw a chair at me."

Natore Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasim Ahmed said two factions of Awami League clashed, leaving 10 people injured.
