Police have recovered six locally-made firearms from a dilapidated grave in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila following a call to the national emergency service 999.

While cleaning a graveyard at Jagadishpur, locals noticed several firearms hidden inside a damaged grave and immediately informed police around 10:30am through the emergency helpline, said Anwar Sattar, a police inspector in charge of media at the helpline.

Acting on the information, a team from Begumganj Police Station went to the spot and recovered five new single-barrel guns and one pipe gun, all locally manufactured, he said.

As the site is located near the border of Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts and falls under the jurisdiction of Chandraganj Police Station of Lakshmipur, the recovered firearms have been handed over to Chandraganj police.

Legal proceedings are underway, police said.
