Star Digital Report

A Dhaka court today again rejected the bail petition of Hefajat-e Islam's Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque in an attempted murder case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station in March 2020.

Judge Syeda Hafsa Jhuma of Dhaka's 8th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order after his lawyer Zaynal Abedin Meshbah moved the bail petition.

On April 2 this year, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court rejected Mamunul's first bail petition in the case.

A joint team of Tejgaon Division police and DMP's Detective Branch arrested Mamunul from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur on April 18 of 2021.

Later, he was shown arrested in the case filed on March 7 of 2020 over vandalism by activists of the Qawmi madrasa-based organisation in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

One GM Alamgir Shahin filed the case against Mamunul and seven other named and some 70-80 unnamed persons for attempt to murder, vandalism, looting a Samsung mobile phone set, Tk 7,000, US$ 2,000 and a Brac Bank debit card during an attack at a local mosque, and also threatening the mosque authorities.

The complainant also alleged that the accused carried out the attack when the mosque authorities were holding a sermon around 8:40pm on March 6, 2020, which also hurt religious sentiments.
