Torturing of spouse: Court rejects bail of suspended UP chairman Babu

Our Correspondent, Jamalpur

A Jamalpur court today denied bail to suspended UP chairman Mahmudul Alam Babu, the mastermind of the murder of journalist Golam Rabbani Nadim, and his associate Rezaul Islam in connection with a case filed by Babu's wife for physically torturing her.

Jamalpur's Senior Judicial Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed passed the order, said court sources.

On May 11 this year, Sabina filed a case with Bakshiganj Police Station, accusing her husband Babu, a suspended chairman of Sadhurpara Union Parishad in Jamalpur, his brother SM Kabir, and Rezaul for threatening her to kill and torturing her.

"The defence lawyers filed petitions with the court, seeking bail for Babu and Rezaul, but the court rejected the petitions," said Yousuf Ali, a lawyer for Sabina.

Nadim, 42, a Jamalpur-based journalist, died on June 15, a day after he was attacked by supporters of Babu.

On June 17, Rab detained Babu from Chilahati union in Panchagarh's Debiganj upazila.
