Youth killed for protesting stalking

A youth was stabbed to death and another injured over protesting the stalking of a girl in Bagerhat's Chitalmari upazila on Friday evening.

Deceased Jabbar Sheikh, 26, is the son of Abdul Haque Sheikh of Barabak village in the upazila. Injured Rajib Sheikh, 26, of the same village, is a relative of Jabbar.

Police said one Delwar Munshi, 30, used to stalk a neighbour of Jabbar. When Jabbar and Rajib protested it on Friday, they had an altercation with Delwar. Delwar's father and brother were present at that time. At one stage, Delwar started stabbing Jabbar and Rajib, leaving him critically injured.

Jabbar later died at Chitalmari Upazila Health Complex. After his death, locals set fire to three houses of Delwar, police said.

Critically injured Rajib was refereed to Dhaka from Khulna Medical College Hospital.

AHM Kamruzzaman Khan, officer-in-charge of Chitalmari Police Station, said they detained one person and additional police personnel were deployed in the village to fend off further untoward incident.

No case has yet been filed.
