Compressor explosion at Aricha Ferry Terminal kills one

Five injured; BIWTC property damaged in Manikganj blast

A man was killed and five others injured this morning in a compressor machine explosion at Aricha Ferry Terminal 3 in Shibalaya upazila of Manikganj.

Mohammad Ali, 50, who suffered a severe leg injury, was taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Dhaka, where he later died, said police.

The other injured were treated at Shibalaya Upazila Health Complex and released after receiving primary care.

The injured are Sabbir Sheikh, 16; Ujjal Mandal, 30; Md Masud, 45; Rawshanara Begum, 55; and Jahangir Sikder, 45.

The blast, around 11:00am, also partially damaged a shop and a counter room of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).

Witnesses said Md Akkas Mistry of Boali Daktarkhana, who rented a tin-shed house near the terminal, used the compressor machine to fill tyres. The incident happened while he was inflating a tyre.

Officer-in-Charge of Shibalaya Police Station Md Monir Hossain confirmed Mohammad Ali’s death and said no case had been filed yet in connection with the incident.
